Ayisha and Malcolm: A Journey of Love, Strength, and Possibility
By Autism Support Network (ASN) | Family Stories
When Malcolm arrived in the world, he arrived early much earlier than anyone expected. Born at just six months, he was incredibly tiny, weighing less than a packet of sugar. From those first fragile moments, it was clear that his journey would be one marked by courage, determination, and above all, love. For Ayisha, Malcolm’s mum, those early days were filled with hope and uncertainty in equal measure. But as Malcolm grew, Ayisha began to notice signs that her son experienced the world differently.
Noticing the Signs Early
Ayisha often shares that she recognised autistic traits in Malcolm quite early. As a mother who was deeply tuned into her child’s needs, she trusted what she was seeing and feeling. Rather than waiting for “someone else” to confirm it, she leaned into action. In a life-changing decision, Ayisha chose to step away from her Master’s programme so she could concentrate fully on understanding Malcolm and ensuring he received the right support at the right time.
Seeking Answers and Support
Ayisha quickly accessed relevant services and arranged a series of assessments to better understand Malcolm’s needs. The results confirmed what she already suspected: Malcolm was diagnosed autistic. The diagnosis did not surprise her—but it did give clarity. It offered a framework for support, opened doors to services, and provided a language to describe Malcolm’s unique profile.
Refusing to Let Autism Define Limits
From day one, Ayisha made a powerful decision: autism would not limit her or her son.
Over the years, she has worked consistently to ensure Malcolm has access to interventions, specialist input, and supportive environments that allow him to thrive. Like many families, they experienced difficult periods especially in the early years, when Malcolm would sometimes have frequent incidents after becoming dysregulated. But with early and regular interventions, those moments became more manageable. Malcolm grew. He learned new coping strategies. His confidence developed. And his outcomes improved.
A Family Effort: Siblings Who Shine
Malcolm’s two elder sisters have played an important role in his upbringing. Their love, patience, and involvement have been instrumental both emotionally and practically.
Recognising their role as young carers, Ayisha ensured both girls were enrolled in young carer programmes. Through these programmes, they have benefited from:
• Training and emotional support
• Fun breaks and family-friendly events
• Opportunities to relax, connect, and enjoy childhood
• Positive experiences as siblings together, not apart
This support helped strengthen the whole family system, ensuring that everyone was cared for, seen, and valued.
More Than One Diagnosis Still Unlimited
Malcolm’s needs do not stop at autism. He also lives with ADHD, epilepsy, and dyslexia. Yet these additional diagnoses have not defined what Malcolm can do, nor have they stopped him from enjoying a full life. With the right adjustments, supportive planning, and consistent advocacy, Malcolm continues to make progress and to surprise people with his resilience, ability, and determination.
Exploring the World Together
One of the most joyful parts of Ayisha and Malcolm’s story is how much they have experienced together. Malcolm has been on numerous holidays with his mum and has travelled successfully to different countries proof that with preparation, support, and understanding, autistic children can enjoy rich, meaningful adventures. Each trip has been a celebration—not just of travel, but of confidence, growth, and family joy.
Learning to Advocate Through Service
Ayisha’s advocacy has also extended beyond her own home. Over the years, she has volunteered with renowned charities that support autistic individuals and their families. Through volunteering, she gained training, practical experience, and deeper insight into autism support strengthening her voice as an advocate for Malcolm and for other families walking similar paths.
A Mother’s Reflection: Peace After the Storm
Today, Ayisha speaks with a calm confidence. She is proud not only of Malcolm’s growth, but of the energy, effort, and sacrifices she made to get him the support he deserved. She is happy and more relaxed now, seeing Malcolm enjoy the best in life: supported by services, surrounded by love, and empowered to be himself.
A Message of Hope
Ayisha and Malcolm’s journey is a reminder that early support, family connection, and consistent advocacy can make an incredible difference. Autism is not the end of a story it is the beginning of a new way of understanding, supporting, and celebrating a child.
And Malcolm’s story continues full of progress, possibility, and joy.
